The opening game of OK Gold play between the Hawks and visiting Hastings did not dissappoint in terms of excitement and it came down to the last second.

After a quick defensive stop on 4th down, Spencer Elliot took the first play and scampered 50yds for the first score of the game. Hastings got a big run from  Alex Randall,.the Hawks defense once again stopped them on 4th down.

Hastings owned the second quarter scoring 16 points on two TD runs by Randall.

Howver, FHE responded with the opening kickoff to Jeshurun Washington who brought it to the house for 90yds and the score to cute the Saxons' lead to 16-14.

Elliot scored on a 1 yard run but the two point conversion failed and the Hawks led 20-16. Hastings countered with their own TD and led 24-20 as the game came down to the final minutes.

On a 4th and inches play, Spencer Elliot looked like he was stopped, but bounced off tackles and ran 42 yards for the go ahead score. A missed extra point left the Hawks only up 26-24 with less than two minutes left.

Hastings were able to get a big run that brought them down to the Hawks 8  yard line. After 3 stops, the Saxons called timeout with 5.6 seconds left and trotted out kicker Zack Nurenberg to attempt a game winning kick.

A low snap and an attempt that looked no good from the start, somehow managed to have just enough and barely landed over the crossbar for a Hastings 27-26 win.

The Hawk players fell to the ground in disbelief after one of the tougher losses ever at Hawk stadium.

FHE will look to rebound next week vs Wayland.
